The Process

What goes into the making of a piece of jewelry? Well... the study of jewelry making is a lifetime pursuit. However, here's the process behind the new "Process Necklace" on Anja Artisan Jewelry.

1. Heavy sterling wire is formed into loops by twisting it around metals rods to form a spring. A tiny saw is then used to slices one side of the springs, creating "jump rings" with a space on one side.

2. Next, the jump rings are "soldered" together. Soldering is much like welding, a tiny lump of sterling silver is melted into the open space in the jump ring creating solid circles of silver.

3. The sterling wire starts out round. I want the rings to be hammered flat. I choose a plandishing hammer to flatten the metal with light texture and a shiny, burnished finish.

4. Last of all- a delicate 14k gold chain is looped through the ends of the pendant and finished with a claps. Voila- a unique, handmade necklace!

Why is this piece called "The Process Necklace?" There is a reason. Read about it on Anja Artisan Jewelry!

Setting Up Shop in Manhattan

One tiny claim staked on behalf of Anja Artisan Jewelry in the city of opportunity. West 56th street, within walking distance of Central Park, the MoMA, and my materials suppliers in the jewelry district. How many little ateliers are tucked into corners and closets of this city?

Coming from the West with overwhelmingly wide spaces, one must adjust to small spaces, and do more with less. No sprawling work tables and excess storage here. As boxes empty and tools overflow shelves and pile onto the floor, my attention turns upward. Wires spools, hammers, pliers, finished jewelry, business cards, and sketches find their place hanging on the walls. After all, building up has always been the solution on this island.

The studio is up and running, the city is buzzing, and the possibilities are vast in this city of tall spaces.
